About Switch:
Switch is Le Laboratoire’s premiere opera / theater production. The work will be premiered by vocalists Mikhail Smigelski and Amanda DeBoer Bartlett, and the chamber ensemble Ecce.
Scenes from the work were premiered at the Etchings Festival in Auvillar, France, this summer. Two weeks of performances, workshops and exhibitions are scheduled at Le Laboratoire for February 6th-21st, 2016.
Switch fuses fragments from Ernest Hemingway’s The Garden of Eden and Italo Calvino’s Six Memos for the Next Millennium to tell the story of a disillusioned artist who is visited by his muse. These mysterious visitations become the theatrical device behind an exploration of the muse’s role throughout Western history. As the artist’s guide, the muse coaxes insights toward self-realization but closer to the blurred edges of sanity, and steps away from personal ruin. In creating this pastiche of mystical encounters the libretto also draws from texts by Homer, Yeats, Mann, D.H. Lawrence and Goethe.
